Team Leader Virology

We are looking for a Team Leader Virology for our R&D department in Leiden, The Netherlands. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to play a leadership role in generation, characterization and analysis of viruses and viral vectors.

You will be leading a team of 7-10 motivated and highly trained individuals (BSc, MSc and PhD’s). This team works on cloning, transfection, culturing/expansion/purification and characterization of viruses and viral vectors. The team focuses on infectivity assays, (q)-PCR, western blot analysis, sequence analysis and other relevant virus characterization techniques. Work is performed both at research and (pre-)GMP level in projects funded by biopharmaceutical companies or ngo’s, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The team collaborates with the up-stream processing and assay team in a number of large process development projects which are executed according to aggressive timelines.

The Team Leader Virology is responsible for leading the team in all above-mentioned activities. He/she assures activities are planned / performed and are of sufficient quality. You coach and train staff and direct experiments to troubleshoot and/or support process development. You will report and present results internally and externally, and you will participate in regular meetings with clients. Additionally, you will act as the Subject Matter Expert for molecular biology and virology activities, assuring that the team delivers scientifically sound proposals for virus and viral vector projects.  Furthermore, you will ensure that the team is on top of relevant technology development and innovations, and for increasing the scientific know how of the team. As a Team Leader Virology, you translate the long-term vision of Batavia Biosciences into the department strategy.

Your letter of motivation and CV should show that you have:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a supervisory/managerial role;
  • A PhD or Master’s degree in life science, biotechnology or related subject;
  • At least 5 years’ experience, of which at least 2 years in a biotechnology or biopharmaceutical industry environment;
  • Proven background in viral vaccine development and (pre-)GMP requirements;
  • Good communication skills: effective communication with clients and other relevant stakeholders on different levels is a natural talent;
  • Good command of the English language (written and spoken).
